I did alot of searching through the normal channels of information and was coming up blank as to what was wrong with
my system. I was running with the Voodoo PCI video card for a long time, very happily mind you, and I upgraded my entire system.
I installed a new socket 7 motherboard (I happen to like the socket 7 board) with an AMD K6-2/350 MHz processor.
I now had USB, FSB PC100 memory and an AGP slot for a new video board! I was going to go with the Voodoo ll platform
but I really didn't want 2 PCI cards so I went with the Diamond Banshee AGP board! Good purchase, right? I was beginning
to doubt my decision! I tried running Half Life several times and it seemed to go fine until the game actually started.
What I got at this point was a veritable smear of 'pixel hell' only to be followed by my machine locking up and the screen
going black. The strangest part of all was that my monitor was turning itself on and off in its blackness. 2D applications
ran fine, however.
To make a long story short, I happened to end up at the 3Dfx web site and stumbled upon a reference to Voodoo driver files
and their impact on the system registry when switching over to the Banshee platform. The bottom line on how it works?
It doesn't!! In order to allow the Banshee drivers to properly work all references to the Voodoo files must be purged
from the system registry. Now you say to yourself, "You mean I have to go through each line of code and individually delete them?"
Not unless you like putting pins under your fingernails for fun! The link below will take you to the 3Dfx site where the file
necessary for sweeping the registry clean is located. Just follw the instructions and the whole process takes literally seconds
to do. Happy gaming!!
